Save your $$$ on a scenic flight with GSL Aviation (with no compromise on scenery!)

I’ve now taken a fair few flights in a helicopter, but I was yet to dip my toes into the light plane pool. Thankfully one sunny afternoon last month GSL aviation helped me to take the plunge, letting me come along on a reef and rainforest scenic flight.

And it was amazing.

GSL use three different aircraft depending on group size and conditions, my steed for the day was to be the GA8 Airvan. Obviously I’ve got no idea what this means in the way of aviation, but I thought it was a lovely little plane. Plus I got to sit in the front and pretend I was driving – yay!

Because Cairns is a busy airport our pilot Jurgen did warn us that we might get delayed on the runway as larger commercial flights take precedence but luckily we got a spot right away and managed to take off almost immediately.

Our flight path took us out over Green Island, curling around Norman Reef and towards land over Low Isles. We adjusted our height anywhere between 500 and 2,500 feet allowing us different perspectives of the scenery around us. After cruising past Thornton’s Peak in the Daintree national park we headed home towards Cairns over rainforest waving at the Captain Cook Highway on the coast as we followed it back down south.

I think the photos speak for themselves!

So would I recommend a flight with GSL aviation? Absolutely! Every second was astoundingly beautiful, my pilot looked a bit like David Beckham and you can’t argue with the price – $269 for an hour and 20 minute flight. If you’re coming to Cairns and want to do a scenic flight without having to re-mortagage your house then you can’t go wrong with these guys.

Need to know:

  • Take water! It gets hot in the plane and I’m very glad someone else gave me the tip ahead of time, I drained a big bottle no problem.
  • Don’t take the flight times as gospel. If you are delayed on the runway during takeoff or have to wait to land the times might not be totally accurate, so don’t plan anything for afterwards that you don’t mind missing.
  • Lots of people get a little airsick, especially if there’s turbulence about, so if you’re prone then take some meds before you fly.
